Description

πŸ›οΈ Carnarvon, WA – November 2026 to September 2028 – Heritage precinct caretaker – Exchange position

The Carnarvon Heritage Group is looking for friendly and reliable volunteer caretakers to help at the historic One Mile Jetty Heritage Precinct on Babbage Island, Carnarvon.

This is a long-term exchange opportunity, with positions available at different times from November 2026 through to September 2028.

Singles and couples are both welcome to apply.

If you’re travelling Australia and looking for somewhere special to stop for a while, this could be a great opportunity to enjoy a relaxed coastal lifestyle while helping preserve an important piece of Western Australian history.

What’s provided

In exchange for helping at the heritage precinct, caretakers receive:

βœ… Free powered caravan or motorhome site
βœ… Free mains water
βœ… Laundry facilities
βœ… Peaceful coastal setting on Babbage Island
βœ… Flexible roster, generally around 2–3 days on followed by 3 days off
βœ… Plenty of time to explore Carnarvon and the Gascoyne region
βœ… Opportunity to meet travellers, locals and visitors from around Australia

The role

The work is straightforward and mainly involves helping keep the museums and precinct operating smoothly.

Duties may include:

βœ… Welcoming visitors
βœ… Collecting museum entry fees and donations
βœ… Opening and closing the precinct
βœ… Light grounds maintenance
βœ… General tidying
βœ… Helping visitors understand the history of the One Mile Jetty and surrounding area

No museum experience is required.

A friendly attitude, reliability and a willingness to help are the most important things.

Length of stay

The Heritage Group ideally prefers volunteers who can stay for around 2–3 months, although shorter stays may also be considered.

Because the caretaker program will continue through to September 2028, there are opportunities for travellers planning their trips well in advance.

This makes it particularly suitable for Grey Nomads who already know they’ll be travelling through the Gascoyne region sometime over the next year or two.

What you’ll need

Applicants will need:

βœ… Their own fully self-contained caravan or motorhome
βœ… A National Police Clearance, or willingness to obtain one
βœ… A friendly and responsible approach
βœ… Confidence dealing with visitors
βœ… Ability to work independently when required

Why Babbage Island?

The One Mile Jetty Heritage Precinct offers a very different kind of stopover.

You’ll be based in a peaceful coastal setting away from the main town centre, with time to explore the wider Carnarvon and Gascoyne region between rostered days.

Previous volunteers have particularly enjoyed the location, the people they’ve met and the relaxed pace of the experience.

The Heritage Group can also put prospective caretakers in contact with previous volunteers who are happy to share their experience.
